Jersey
The History of Jersey Stamps
Jersey’s journey into postal independence began during World War II, when German forces occupied the island from 1940 to 1945. Cut off from the mainland, Jersey issued its first local stamps in 1941, featuring the Jersey Arms and island map. These stamps became a necessity for local correspondence and are now highly valued by collectors.
After the war, Jersey resumed using British stamps, but as the island developed its autonomy, it sought greater control over its postal services. In 1969, Jersey gained full postal independence and established the Jersey Post Office. This marked the issuance of the first definitive series of Jersey stamps, showcasing its unique heritage, culture, and natural beauty.
Jersey stamps are renowned for their vibrant designs, often featuring local landmarks, flora and fauna, and historical figures. They not only facilitate communication but also serve as miniature works of art that tell the island’s story to the world.
Today, Jersey stamps remain a source of pride and continue to attract philatelists worldwide.
